Co najmniej 6 osób poniosło we wtorek wieczorem śmierć a 12 zostało rannych, w rezultacie staranowania przez pociąg podmiejski pojazdu, który znalazł się na torach na północnych przedmieściach Nowego Jorku - poinformował rzecznik kolei Metro-North Railroad.

Według rzecznika Aarona Donovana, pociąg jadący z Nowego Jorku linią Metro-North Harlem staranował samochód terenowy (SUV) Jeep Cherokee na przejeździe kolejowym w miejscowości Valhalla, w odległości 32 km na północ od Nowego Jorku. Rozpędzony pociąg pchał samochód przez kilkadziesiąt metrów. Pojazd i przód pociągu zapaliły się.

Zginęła kobieta kierująca samochodem oraz pięciu pasażerów pociągu. Według wstępnych ustaleń, ofiary śmiertelne w pociągu zginęły w rezultacie pożaru. Zapory przejazdu zamknęły się kiedy pojazd znajdował się na torach, co uniemożliwiło kierującej ucieczkę.

Ruch pociągów na całej linii został wstrzymany a pasażerów ewakuowano na tył składu. Jeden z pasażerów pociągu powiedział telewizji ABC, że w pociągu było ok. 750 osób. Wiele osób miało zostać uwięzionych w wagonach.

Rannych przewieziono do szpitali a pozostali pasażerowie kontynuowali podróż podstawionymi autobusami.

Koleje Metro-North są drugimi pod względem liczby przewożonych pasażerów w USA, po Long Island Rail Road. Dziennie przewożą ok. 280 tys. osób w stanach Nowy Jork i Connecticut.

Linia Metro-North Harlem prowadzi z nowojorskiej dzielnicy Harlem na Manhattanie do Wassaic, w stanie Nowy Jork. (PAP)
