Seven Polish soccer fans sentenced for attacking Mexican cadets

Seven Polish soccer fans were sentenced to a prison term by a district court in Gdynia (northern Poland) on Tuesday for attacking Mexican naval cadets on a beach in the Baltic port city of Gdynia in August 2013.

The court sentenced one man to two years and two months, while six others were sentenced to one year and ten months in prison. Each of the convicted Poles was ordered to pay PLN 3,000 to two Mexicans.

According to judge Bartosz Kahsin, no evidence collected during the investigation showed that the beach brawl was started by the Mexicans who were on a training voyage aboard a sailing vessel docked in Gdynia.

The verdict is subject to appeal.

The August 18, 2013 brawl broke out between rowdy fans of the south-Polish soccer club Ruch Chorzow and a group of Mexican naval cadets. The Ruch Chorzow fans were in Gdynia for their team's game with local club Arka Gdynia. (PAP)
