Ostatnie pożegnanie sędzi Ruth Bader Ginsburg (ZDJĘCIA, WIDEO)
Trumna z ciałem sędzi  Ruth Bader Ginsburg zmarłej 18 września  w piątek została wystawiona w Kapitolu.  Tym samym pierwszy raz honoru tego dostąpiła kobieta oraz osoba o pochodzeniu żydowskim.

Wraz z małżonką Melanią przez chwilę oddawał hołd zmarłej w milczeniu, stojąc przy jej owiniętej w amerykańską flagę trumnie.

Prezydent został wygwizdany przez tłum przed sądem. Zgromadzeni – w zdecydowanej większości polityczni przeciwnicy prezydenta – mają mu za złe, że wbrew woli Ginsburg zamierza przeprowadzić proces nominacji jej zastępczyni jeszcze przed zaplanowanymi na 3 listopada wyborami. Na finiszu kampanii toczy się o to w USA gorący polityczny spór. Trump zapowiedział, że jego kandydatką będzie kobieta, a jej nazwisko zostanie ogłoszone w sobotę. Republikanie twierdzą, że mają w Senacie potrzebną większość, by zatwierdzić wybór swojego prezydenta przed 3 listopada. Budzi to ostry sprzeciw demokratów, którzy wskazują, że to ten kandydat i ta partia, które zwyciężą w wyborach, powinny wskazać następczynie Ginsburg. Zwyczaj stanowi, że nowych sędziów Sądu Najwyższego nie wybierano na krótko przed wyborami. Demokraci przypominają, że gdy w ostatnim roku urzędowania prezydenta Baracka Obamy usiłował on wypełnić wakat po konserwatywnym sędzim Antoninie Scalii, republikanie zablokowali jego kandydata, powołując się na ten zwyczaj. Mimo presji lider republikańskiej większości w Senacie Mitch McConnell zapowiada, że przeprowadzi głosowanie nad kandydatką wskazaną przez Trumpa. Jego zdaniem sytuacja nie przypomina 2016 roku, gdyż tym razem republikanie mają i Biały Dom, i Senat, a wtedy nie mieli prezydenta. Stąd nie widzi braku konsekwencji partii w przypadku rozpoczęcia procedury mianowania następczyni Ginsburg. Stawka sporu jest wysoka, bo Sąd Najwyższy pełni bardzo ważną rolę w systemie politycznym USA, a jego decyzje miewają epokowe znaczenie: za pomocą decyzji SN w całym kraju zalegalizowano małżeństwa homoseksualne, a wcześniej zakazano segregacji rasowej czy zalegalizowano aborcję. Ponieważ sędziowie powoływani są dożywotnio, obecna decyzja będzie miała długoterminowe konsekwencje. (PAP)
