Irak otrzymał w poniedziałek ze Stanów Zjednoczonych pierwszą partię myśliwców F-16 dla swych sił powietrznych - poinformował urząd premiera Hajdera al-Abadiego.
Władze irackie zamówiły 36 produkowanych przez koncern Lockheed Martin samolotów po 65 mln dolarów za egzemplarz, ale dostawa opóźniła się w związku z obawami o stan bezpieczeństwa po opanowaniu w ubiegłym roku znacznych obszarów Iraku przez Państwo Islamskie.
Cytowany przez agencję Reutera oficer irackich sił powietrznych powiedział, że cztery maszyny F-16 wylądowały w bazie Balad na północ od Bagdadu krótko po południu czasu lokalnego, czyli po godz. 11 w Polsce.
Przylot pierwszych zamówionych myśliwców nastąpił krótko po ogłoszeniu przez irackie władze rozpoczęcia operacji zbrojnej, której celem jest wyparcie sił Państwa Islamskiego z położonej na zachód od Bagdadu prowincji Anbar. (PAP)
