USA rozpoczęły wycofywanie swych żołnierzy z krajów Afryki Zachodniej, dotkniętych epidemią wirusa ebola. Jak poinformował we wtorek Pentagon, do końca kwietnia do USA powrócą niemal wszyscy z 2800 wojskowych.
Z Afryki wyjechało już 1,5 tysiąca amerykańskich żołnierzy.
Pentagon pokreślił, że amerykańska misja wojskowa w Afryce Zachodniej była udana. Po 30 kwietnia w regionie pozostanie jedynie około 100 żołnierzy USA, którzy nadal będą pomagać lokalnym służbom medycznym w walce z ebolą.
O wysłaniu blisko 3 tysięcy żołnierzy do Afryki Zachodniej zdecydował we wrześniu ubiegłego roku prezydent Barack Obama. Zadania amerykańskich wojskowych koncentrowały się głównie na wsparciu logistycznym, szkoleniu personelu medycznego i budowie szpitali.
Obecna epidemia gorączki krwotocznej zabiła w Afryce Zachodniej - głównie w Liberii, Gwinei i Sierra Leone - ponad 9 tysięcy ludzi.(PAP)
