Poland world's biggest raspberry producer

Poland is a global leader in raspberry production, accounting for 20 percent of output, said the president of the International Raspberry Organization (IRO), Antonio Dominguez at a fruit growers' conference in Krasnik (south-eastern Poland).

"I want to congratulate Poland which is a world leader in the production and export of raspberries. These are small, family plantations. Poland is the country we can learn from", Dominguez said at a press conference.

Poland produced over 127,000 tons of raspberries in 2012, ranking first in the world. Seventy-five percent of the output comes from the Lublin region in south-eastern Poland.

Central Statistical Office (GUS) data show that in 2013 raspberry production was still high but dropped 5.8 percent from 2012. The IRO estimates 2013 global output at 326,500 tons, 19 percent less than in 2012. (PAP)
