Two Polish hitch-hikers were killed on Wednesday night when a van ran over the pair while they were reportedly lying down in the middle of a road in Seelow, east Germany.
The accident occurred at about 10 pm on Wednesday, and the victims were a 30-year-old man from Lower Silesia, and a 25-year-old woman from the city of Piotr Trybunalski, central Poland. A third Pole fled the scene in shock and he has since been interviewed by police. Meanwhile, the 41-year-old driver of the Citroen C8 was unharmed.
According to Slawomir Konieczny, a police spokesman from Poland's Lubusz region, which lies on the German border, the three had been camping in Seelow, but they were trying to return to Poland. It is understood that the trio had spent several hours trying to encourage a driver to pick them up.
Konieczny, who has been liaising with German police, informed Poland's TVN television station that the surviving Pole admitted that the three had been drinking.
Allegedly, the victims decided that by lying in the middle of the road, a car would be sure to stop. The pair supposedly encouraged their companion to join them, but he declined.
Shortly after 10 pm, a Citroen C8 van appeared, and ran over the pair, killing them both. German police are investigating the matter.
