A documentary film about WWII courier Jan Karski goes on general release on Friday, 101 years to the day after the Polish underground hero was born.

'Karski and the Lords of Humanity' combines archival footage with new interviews and digital rotoscope animation.

Dubbed 'the man who tried to stop the Holocaust', Karski risked his skin to transmit intelligence about the Shoah to London and Washington, acting as an emissary of the Polish Underground State.
''This is a man who had moral principles that were unshakeable,'' said director Sławomir Grunberg, prior to the film's official premiere on Thursday night at Warsaw's recently opened Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

As a result of his wartime exploits, Karski was declared a 'righteous gentile' by Israel's Yad Vashem Institute, and he was given honorary Israeli citizenship. He worked as a professor at the University of Georgetown, Washington, for over 40 years, and died in 2000.

His wife was the Polish-Jewish dancer Pola Nireńska.
