Around one percent of Poles treated for alcohol addiction are younger than 19, data shows.
As many as 0.9 percent of Poles suffering from alcoholism and treated at institutions in 2013 were minors, up to the age of 18. The data was revealed in a Report on the implementation of the Law on Education in Sobriety and Counteracting Alcoholism, which is presented each year by the government to parliament.
The report indicated that alcohol is consumed regularly by more than 80 percent of adult Poles, and there are more female teetotalers (25.5 percent) than men (10.9 percent). In 2013, per-capita alcohol consumption stood at 9.67 litres, an increase by 0.5 litres over the previous year.
A recent study carried out by research firm Nielsen has found that Poles are spending more money on beer than any other food or drink product. According to the study, Poles spent PLN 14.5 billion (EUR 3.4 billion) on beer between December 2013 and November 2014.
