Najsłynniejszy amerykański świstak Phil w miejscowości Punxsutawney w Pensylwanii w poniedziałek zobaczył swój cień. Wróży to, że zima potrwa jeszcze sześć tygodni. Ale świstak Chuck z Nowego Jorku przewiduje gwałtowne nadejście wiosny.
Legenda, podobno rodem z Niemiec, mówi, że jeśli w dzień Matki Boskiej Gromnicznej (2 lutego), świstak zobaczy swój cień, czeka nas jeszcze długa zima; jeśli cienia nie będzie - wkrótce przyjdzie wiosna.
Jak co roku Phila obserwowały tysiące fanów. Za każdym razem rytuał wygląda tak samo: Phil wychodzi ze swej elektrycznie ogrzewanej norki w pniu drzewa, rozgląda się za swym cieniem, po czym szepcze prognozę do ucha przedstawicielowi Klubu Świstaka. Przedstawiciel przekłada to na angielski i informuje opinię publiczną.
Mniej sławny kuzyn Phila, Chuck z ogrodu zoologicznego na Staten Island w Nowym Jorku, gdzie w poniedziałek padał śnieg z marznącą mżawką, swego cienia nie ujrzał. W tym roku Chuck w ogóle nie wyszedł ze swego domku z pleksi.
Jednak trzeci świstak, Chuckles z Manchesteru w stanie Connecticut, swój cień zobaczył, co zwiastuje jeszcze długą zimę. Przynajmniej w Ameryce.
Phil stał się znany na całym świecie dzięki filmowi "Dzień świstaka" (1993 r.) z Billem Murrayem i Andie MacDowell.
Według prowadzonego od 1887 roku rejestru "wystąpień" świstaka zobaczył on swój cień 101 razy, a nie zobaczył 17 razy; z kilku lat brakuje danych.(PAP)
