London Poles get police helpline

The sizeable Polish community in the English capital will be able to communicate with police – via Twitter.

Two enterprising London officers of Polish descent have set up the @MPSPolska Twitter account to help their compatriots communicate with law-enforcement officials in the city.

The drive is meant to help Poles living in London feel safe and encourage them to cooperate with police.

“Overcoming the language barrier is key when talking to people of different nationalities, cultures and backgrounds. Good communication is essential to effective police operations, especially when it comes to helping victims or to gather important information,” Magdalena Rosiak, the head of the initiative, said.

Rosiak runs the Twitter service together with another Polish officer, Anna Szczepańska.

For now the system is aimed towards two boroughs of London, Ealing (where 6.3 percent of the population speak Polish), and Hounslow (4.1 percent).

Polish is the second most spoken language in the UK. (rg)
