Wroclaw to host 2016 European Film Awards

Wroclaw will host the European Film Awards in 2016, rounding off its programme as a European Capital of Culture that year.

Mayor of Wroclaw Rafal Dutkiewicz announced the news at a press conference on Tuesday.

“In December 2016 we will have the biggest event in European cinema here in Wroclaw,” he enthused.

The European Film Awards are voted for by the European Film Academy, which was founded in Berlin in 1988 by a group of like-minded directors.

Its initial aim was to promote European film-making in the wider world, aided by an annual awards ceremony.

Last year, Polish director Agnieszka Holland was chosen as the first female president of the academy, following Wim Wenders' 18-year tenure.

The annual awards ceremony alternates between Berlin and other European cities, with Poland last hosting the ceremony in Warsaw in 2006.

This year's edition will be held in Riga, Latvia on 13 December. (nh)
