Poland steps up security ahead of UN Climate Change Conference

Poland's Interior Ministry will reintroduce border checks for the duration of the UN Climate Change Conference, which begins in Warsaw on Monday.

“There will be random checks, as was the case during the Euro 2012 football championships,” says border guard spokesperson Agnieszka Golias.

“Travellers should bear in mind that they might be stopped,” she added.

Until 23 November, 123 road border crossings with the Czech Republic will be under greater surveillance, 58 with Slovakia, 11 with Germany and 9 with Lithuania (Ukraine and Belarus are not part of the Schengen Zone and so checks there continue as normal).

Meanwhile, 18 Polish airports and 9 ports will be upping security levels.

The Ministry of the Interior has also planned support from Poland's Military Police in the event of any disturbance that might affect the climate conference in Warsaw.

Delegations from across the globe are due to descend on the Polish capital for the 19th edition of the event.
