Poles 'fighting with separatists in Ukraine'

The co-chairman of the Novorossiya People's Front claims that foreigners, including Poles, are fighting alongside separatists against government forces in eastern regions of Ukraine.

“I personally know a few Poles, anti-fascists, who are fighting on our side. These people recognize that they need to stand up to Ukrainian fascism,” Konstantin Dolgov has told Polish Radio.

Dolgow added that Spanish, French and even the Americans are also fighting alongside separatist rebels in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

The claim comes as areas controlled by pro-Russian rebels get set for Sunday's separatist elections, seven days after the rest of Ukraine voted in a general election, which saw victory for parties loyal to President Poroshenko and Prime Minister Yasteniuk.

Sunday's vote aims to elect leaders and a parliament in a self-proclaimed autonomous republic.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Russian President Vladimir Putin on the telephone on Friday that Sunday's elections were illegitimate and would not be recognized by European leaders, Reuters reports.

Over 3,700 people have been killed in fighting in eastern Ukraine so far this year.
