US president arrives in Warsaw

US President Barack Obama has arrived in Warsaw to take part in the Freedom Day celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Poland's first partly-free elections of June 4, 1989 that put an end to almost half-a-century long communist rule.

Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski has greeted his US counterpart at the airport.

Officials representing some 40 countries will take part in the celebrations, including a number of heads of states and government.

Barack Obama is scheduled to hold talks with Bronislaw Komorowski and with Polish PM Donald Tusk. He will also attend a meeting of 17 Central and Eastern European heads of states and governments.

At the key event in Warsaw's Castle Square on Wednesday, President Obama, together with his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski, will address the guests.

While in Warsaw, Obama is also scheduled to meet Ukraine's President-elect Petro Poroshenko on Wednesday. (PAP)
