President visits John Paul II family home

In his teachings John Paul II always emphasised that freedom and responsibility for oneself and the community were inseparable, President Bronislaw Komorowski said Wednesday in the Polish-born pope's home town Wadowice.

In Wadowice the president and his wife visited John Paul II's family home, now converted into a museum scheduled to be opened Wednesday evening by PM Donald Tusk and Krakow Bishop Stanislaw Dziwisz.

"There is a connection between freedom and the life and teachings of John Paul II, and it is especially visible here in Wadowice, where it all began. Freedom always played a major role in (John Paul II's - PAP) teachings. He saw it through the prism of the Gospel and underscored that which was of importance both for Poland's freedom strivings and Poland's path through freedom - the inseparability of freedom and responsibility. Responsibility for oneself and the community in which one lives, for the community between faith and the people", Komorowski said.

Founded in 1984, the John Paul II museum in Wadowice will open after a three year closure owing to reconstruction work on the building.

In connection with the April 10 4th anniversary of the 2010 Smolensk air disaster which among others killed Poland's former President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, Komorowski and his wife laid flowers at the presidential pair's tomb in Krakow's Wawel Castle. (PAP)
