Poland's Kamil Stoch wins men's normal hill gold at Sochi

Kamil Stoch of Poland won the men's normal hill individual ski jumping gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Sochi on Sunday. Peter Prevc of Slovenia took the silver and Norway's Anders Bardal won the bronze.

Stoch, the World Cup leader and winner of four World Cup events this season, jumped 105.5 meters and 103.5 meters, the best jumps in both rounds, and won by 12.7 points over Prevc.

Stoch is the third Pole to take the Winter Olympic gold after Wojciech Fortuna triumphed on the large hill in Sapporo in 1972 and Justyna Kowalczyk won in Vancouver in 2010.

President Bronislaw Komorowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk congratulated Stoch on Twitter and thanked him "for such a great day for all Poles". Sejm (lower house) Speaker Ewa Kopacz thanked Stoch for the first medal for Poland won during the Olympic Games in Sochi. (PAP)
