Rail carrier PKP Intercity to axe jobs

Polish rail carrier PKP Intercity is planning to reduce its headcount by some 300 people by 2015, as 200 may retire and another 100 could be laid off. Potential job cuts will not affect passengers, the railway has assured.

"Security is our priority and the employment optimisation will not affect it," PKP Intercity spokeswoman Zuzanna Szopowska told PAP.

The layoffs will not be related to jobs directly connected with running the trains or traffic security. "The optimisation will mainly affect support areas, such as HR, payrolls, logistics and other administrative jobs as well as technical support. We are also aware that some employees will retire next year," the spokeswoman said. Some 200 workers may retire by 2015.

Finals decisions on the employment restructuring have not been taken yet. Total employment is planned to go down to 7,000 from 7,300.

PKP Intercity is the fourth largest passenger rail carrier in Poland and the market leader in intercity rail transportation, according to the Office of Rail Transportation.
