Left launches secularism in Polish schools campaign

Under the slogan "build schools, tax priests " the United Left (ZL) party has launched a campaign for secularism in Polish schools.

The leftist coalition wants the removal of religion from schools, the liquidation of the Church Fund and the start of priests paying income tax.
Money saved on religious classes could be allocated to the most urgent needs of students, Barbara Nowacka, heading the Warsaw electoral list of the United Left (SLD + TR + PPS + UP + Greens), said.
"Today, the first of September, when many of us are starting the school year, we know how important a discussion about Polish schools is. We all know that schools are underfunded, that they lack basic stuff. Children come to school hungry and go home from school hungry and this is one of the biggest ills not only of politics, but of society as a whole, one of the biggest stains on modern society," she said.
"Schools are missing dentists, lacking of medical care, lacking even water, which from 1 September should be guaranteed for each school." (jh/rk)
