President Bronislaw Komorowski appointed Professor Malgorzata Gersdorf First President of the Supreme Court on Wednesday. She is the first woman to hold this prestigious post.
The 61 year-old professor of law at the Warsaw University has been Supreme Court (SN) judge since 2008. She specializes in labour law. Komorowski chose her over the second candidate named by the plenary meeting of all SN judges Lech Paprzycki.
The ceremony of appointment was held at the Belweder Palace in the presence of SN judges, presidents of other law courts, the justice minister and other officials.
The First President's post was vacated last January after the death of judge Stanislaw Dabrowski. (PAP)
