Polish, U.S. presidents on Ukraine

The situation in Ukraine and steps designed to overcome the current crisis were the subject of a Sunday phone conversation of Polish and U.S. Presidents Bronislaw Komorowski and Barack Obama.

"The U.S. president confirmed the security guarantees for Poland. The two leaders condemned the escalation of Russian actions in the Black Sea Crimean peninsula," PAP was told by presidential minister Jaromir Sokolowski.

According to Sokolowski, the Polish president "stressed the need to formulate a tough, adequate and coordinated answer of the West to Russia's intrusion into Ukraine and a breach of international law".

"President Komorowski declared Poland's readiness to actively co-author this strategy," the minister said and added that the two presidents stressed the significance of economic aid that should soon be offered to Ukraine and declared support for the new government in Kiev.

Also on Sunday the Polish president spoke in separate phone calls to Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov, European Council President Herman van Rompuy and the presidents of the Baltic States.

An extraordinary meeting of the European Council on Ukraine was the subject of Sunday phone conversations of Polish PM Donald Tusk with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Government Information Centre reported.

On Saturday the Russian Federation Council authorised the use military force to protect Russian citizens in Ukraine. Ukraine put its military on high alert Sunday and appealed for international help to avoid what it feared was the possibility of a wider invasion by Russia. (PAP)
