Crime rate on decline in Poland - police

2013 saw 1.64 million crimes committed in Poland or nearly 56,000 less on the 2012 figure with detectability rate at 67.1 pct versus 67.8 pct in the previous year, Polish national police chief Marek Dzialoszynski told reporters on Thursday.



Dzialoszynski added that in 2003 some 4,000 crimes were committed daily while in 2013 crime number fell to 2.9 thousand daily.

At a conference summing up the state of security in Poland in 2013 Dzialoszynski explained that the number of criminal acts stood at 711.5 thousand (down 70,000 on 2012 figure), the number of brawls and beatings was at 8.8 thousand or down 2.6 thousand on 2012, robberies went down by 4.2 thousand to 20.4 thousand and thefts fell by 16.1 to 214.6 thousand while the number of thefts with break-ins fell by 9.3 thousand to 118.4 thousand.

The number of murders remained flat on 2012 at 574, rapes fell by 70 cases to 1.4 thousand, car thefts fell by 765 vehicles to 15.5 thousand.

In 2013 car accidents claimed 3,291 lives, down from 3,571 in 2012, 43,471 injured versus 45,792 in 2012. In 2013 policemen caught 162,000 drunk drivers, down from 171,000 in 2012. By the end of 2014 the number of traffic policemen is to grow from 8,000 to 9,200.

Dzialoszynski also said that according to the April 2013 CBOS poll 89 percent of Poles felt safe in the area of their residence, flat on 2012. The index has never been this high.

The police force, at nearly 97.7 thousand, still falls short of 4.6 thousand full-time jobs, the national police chief said. (PAP)
