Three dead in Silesian coal mine accident

Three men trapped at the Myslowice-Wesola colliery in southern Poland in the early hours of Monday morning have been found dead. One man survived having managed to make it to the surface without the aid of the rescue team.

"We have confirmed the deaths of three people. The fourth has been taken to St. Barbara's hospital in Sosnowiec. His condition is stable," colliery spokesman Jacek Tuszyński has told the PAP news agency.

The men were employees of Kopex-PBS, a company which constructs and consolidates mine shafts.

Wojcech Jaros, a spokesman for Katowicki Holding Weglowy (Katowice Coal Holding), said that the men had been at work in a shaft about 320 metres below the surface.

“At about 4.20 am, the mine received information that a power cable mounted in the shaft had collapsed,” he said.

An investigation into the cause of the maintenance workers is under way.
