Quigley Statement on Visit to Ukraine (PHOTOS)

Chicago, Ill. –  U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), Co-Chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus and member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released a statement following the conclusion of his visit to Ukraine. During his visit, Quigley met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, held a meeting with members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (the country’s parliament), and visited Bucha, Irpin, and other areas near Kyiv, Ukraine. The bipartisan Congressional Delegation was led by Representative Adam Smith (WA-09), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and included Representatives Mike Waltz (FL-06), Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), and Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11).

“During my visit to Ukraine, I was deeply moved by the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people. Despite the relentless attacks by the Russian military and the horrific acts committed in previously occupied areas, Ukrainians have persevered. They have begun the difficult work of rebuilding even as they continue defending their nation in the east. I am incredibly inspired by their resolve.

“It was an honor to meet with President Zelenskyy, Minister of Defense Reznikov, and members of the Ukrainian Rada. We had fruitful discussions about the impact of western aid on the war and what the United States and Congress can do to continue to support their fight for democracy. I also had the pleasure of meeting ordinary Ukrainians during my visit, whose grief is outweighed only by their courage.

“I was particularly moved by my visit to Bucha, Ukraine – the site of some of the Russian military’s most horrifying atrocities. I paid my respects and came away even more committed to assisting Ukraine and holding the perpetrators of this genocide responsible for their crimes.

“My message to Russian President Putin is clear: your aims in Ukraine have failed. If you continue this illegal assault, Russia will only grow more isolated and more humiliated. Ukraine and its allies will not waver.”
