Three die after hurricane Xavier rips through northern Poland

Three people died and over 100,000 households are without electricity on Friday morning after high winds caused chaos in northern Poland, Thursday night, Friday morning.








Firefighters took part in 546 rescues between midnight and 5 am local time, with the worst hit area being the West Pomerania region on the Baltic coast.

Three people died when a tree came down on a car in Lebork, Pomerania district in northern Poland. All three victims were middle-aged men, emergency services report.

According to police spokesman Piotr Cholajda, firefighters intervened 124 times in West Pomerania, and there were also high instances of problems in Wielopolska (63) and Silesia (59).Four people were injured, including two in Silesia, one in Wielkopolska and one in Masovia.

Meanwhile, twelve people in the Silesian town of Cieszyn had to be evacuated following damage to a gas line, and a six-person family in the vicinity of Zlotoryja, Lower Silesia also had to be moved.

A power line that fell on a barn in Skotnik, West Pomerania, killed twenty-six cattle.

Strong winds are expected to continue on Friday, accompanied by snow, and once again the Baltic coast is the most vulnerable area. (nh/pg)
