WOLYN RESOLUTION

Whereas the Polish American Congress fully supports the Ukrainian fight against the evil and unjustified Russian invasion and its desire for full territorial sovereignty and independence.
Whereas, since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022 the Polish American Congress has offered steadfast assistance to Ukrainian needs for support through donations and lobbying the United States government for supplemental funding and military assistance needed to halt the Russian invaders;
Whereas, the tragic and intentional mass killing of approximately 100,000 Poles by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army that took place between 1943-1945 in the Volhynia region of Germany Nazi occupied Poland was discussed at the meeting of the Council of Directors Chicago, Illinois on October 12, 2024;
Whereas, for decades, the massacre which took place has not been discussed or denied by Ukraine;
Whereas, thousands of people were forced to witness the execution of their families and neighbors tortured to death;
Whereas, in present terms, this was a genocide or ethnic cleansing to eliminate the Poles;
Whereas, the tragedy and brutality that occurred in Volhynia is part of history and the lives lost cannot be brought back;
Whereas, this matter has been addressed in the past and the Polish American Congress expects the Ukrainian government to respect the demands of Poland and allow the bodies of the murdered victims to be exhumed from their graves and given the proper burials;
Whereas, the Polish American Congress expects said government to condemn and express remorse for this heinous action of Ukrainian Insurgent Army;
Whereas, the Polish American Congress supports the Polish government in its effort toward reconciliation, particularly considering Poland’s open door policy to Ukrainians in light of the war with Russia;
Therefore, be it resolved that the Polish American Congress unanimously adopted this resolution at the annual meeting of the Council of Directors on October 12, 2024.
