Ukraine’s acting interior minister has issued an arrest warrant for deposed president Viktor Yanukovych.
Arsen Avakov has stated that Yanukovych is wanted for “mass killings of civilians” after a week of clashes in Kiev that left over 70 protesters and policeman dead. Since protests began in November there have been over 100 casualties.
Avakov has claimed that Yanukovych travelled on Sunday from the city of Kharkiv to the Crimea region, but that as of Monday morning it is no longer clear where the ousted president is.
The acting interior minister also claimed that a hand-written statement from Yanukovych confirmed that he had released state security services from their task to protect him.
“I , president of Ukraine, withdraw from state protection, V.F.Yanukovych,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, Poland’s foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski has urged Ukrainians to honour Friday’s agreement and maintain a dialogue with Russia.
