Polish president invites Obama to attend freedom anniversary

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said late on Wednesday he had invited US President Barack Obama to attend the 25th anniversary of Poland’s independence on June 4. The invitation was received „with interest,” Komorowski added. 

US President Obama participates in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National CemeteryWe have not heard a definite „yes,” but „there are circumstances that make it possible to count on it,” Komorowski told Polish television TVP Info late on Wednesday.

„I have invited President Obama in relation to the 25th anniversary of Polish freedom and the start of the whole process of Central and Eastern Europe’s liberation,” the president recalled.

„The invitation was received with interest and sympathy,” Komorowski added.

On June 4, 1989 a semi-free election took power from Poland’s communist regime. The date is considered the beginning of Poland’s post-communist existence as a free country. The Berlin Wall collapsed five months later. (PAP)
