Zarówno Kongres, jak i Biały Dom wysunęli propozycje kompleksowej reformy imigracyjnej. Obecnie obowiązujące przepisy nie są egzekwowane i zostały określone przez prezydenta Obamę jako „przestarzałe i nagminnie łamane”.
Z rządowych danych wynika, że w kraju przebywa ponad 11 mln nieudokumentowanych imigrantów. Przeciwnicy reformy imigracyjnej naiwnie domagają się, by rząd wyłapał i deportował 11 mln imigrantów bez dokumentów. Pozbycie się 11 mln osób byłoby równoznaczne z deportacją wszystkich mieszkańców Wyoming, Vermont, Alaski, Dakoty Północnej i Południowej, Delaware, Montany, Rhode Island, Hawajów, New Hampshire, Maine i Idaho! To nierealistyczne, choć takie żądania stawia bardzo głośna mniejszość.
Należy pamiętać, że Stany Zjednoczone to kraj imigrantów. Prezydent Obama stwierdził: „To nie jest tylko debata o polityce. To debata o ludziach. Debata o kobietach, mężczyznach i młodych ludziach, którzy nie chcą niczego więcej niż uzyskania możliwości wniesienia swego udziału do historii Stanów Zjednoczonych”. Cała historia tego kraju jest bowiem dowodem na to, że imigracja czyniła ten kraj silniejszym.
Popieramy propozycje prezydenta, by: 1. nadal zwiększać bezpieczeństwo naszych granic; 2. upominać pracodawców zatrudniających nieudokumentowanych imigrantów; 3. przyznawać obywatelstwo tym, którzy na nie zasługują i 3. usprawniać proces legalnej imigracji. Jak w wypadku każdej ustawy tak i tutaj należy rzetelnie dopracować wszystkie szczegóły. My, czyli my wszyscy jako imigranci będziemy starannie obserwować te propozycje i nie powstrzymamy się przed wyrażaniem naszym przedstawicielom w Kongresie naszych opinii i zastrzeżeń w tej sprawie.

Long overdue
Both the U.S. Congress and the White House are proposing a comprehensive overhaul of U.S. immigration laws. Current laws appear to be unenforceable and have been described by the President as „out of date and badly broken.”
The government estimates that we have over 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the country. Opponents of immigration reform naively demand that the government round up and deport the 11 million undocumented immigrants. Removing 11 million people would be like deporting everyone from the states of: Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, and Idaho! This is not realistic. Yet this is the demands of a very vocal minority.
It is important to remember that the United States is a nation of immigrants. As President Obama stated, „Remember — that this is not just a debate about policy. It’s about people. It’s about men and women and young people who want nothing more than the chance to earn their way into the American story.” Throughout American history, immigration has made our nation stronger.
We support both the President’s immigration platform to: 1) continue to strengthen border security; 2) crack down on employers hiring undocumented workers; 3) earned citizenship; and 4) streamlining legal immigration. As in all legislation, the details and the fine point must be fully explored and determined.
We, and that means all of us as immigrants, must follow this legislation carefully, and not be timid in expressing our opinion and concerns to our congressional representatives.
