The most severely affected region was the Podlaskie Voivodeship in northeastern Poland, which saw intense snowfall.
PGE Distribution, the largest electricity supplier in Poland, initially reported that 20,000 people in Podlaskie were left without electricity following power line failures. However estimates of the number of people affected have now almost doubled to 38,000.

According to Agnieszka Tyszkiewicz, a spokesperson for PGE Distribution, the problems have mostly affected power lines going through forested areas, where snow-laden trees have interrupted the lines.

She added that due to the nature of the terrain it will be difficult to find the places where the lines have been interrupted and then send in specialist equipment to perform repairs.

It is unknown when the system will be fixed although PGE assured customers that it was working on the problem.
Further local snow falls have been forecast for Podlaskie today, as well as temperatures of 0-2 degrees during the day.
