Polish President Duda remembers Battle of Warsaw

-

Polish President Andrzej Duda on Saturday laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Warsaw’s Piłsudski Square in front of a nearby statue of Marshal Jozef Piłsudski who led the victorious campaign against invading Bolsheviks in 1920.

The ceremony marks Army Day, a national holiday, which celebrates the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw at which the newly formed Polish army under Piłsudski defeated the Red Army at the gates of Warsaw.

Duda was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, head of the special services (BBN) Paweł Soloch and Polish army generals. Onlookers at the ceremony greeted the president with applause and after laying the flowers Duda talked with some of them briefly and had joint pictures taken.

Earlier, the president laid flowers at the monument of Marshal Piłsudski in front of the Belvedere Palace in Warsaw. He later took part in a mass at the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army. (jh/rk)
