John Paul II and the Fall of Communism nominated for five Emmy awards

Chicago, Illinois, October 18, 2016 – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Chicago/Midwest Chapter, nominated Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Communism for five Emmy awards last night at a nominations event held in Chicago. With its strong showing, which included best historical documentary and photography, the documentary was among the most awarded entries of the evening recognizing excellence in the field of broadcast television.

“These Emmy nominations are a great honor for this important documentary, which captures the intricate role played by John Paul in the collapse of communism and the liberation of Central and Eastern Europe,” said Executive Producer Carl Anderson, who worked closely with John Paul II during his service as a White House official under President Ronald Reagan. „John Paul II understood that men and women live and die for great ideas, and, through his actions and words, brought about the rebirth of freedom on the European continent.”

Narrated by actor Jim Caviezel, and with original music by renowned composer Joe Kraemer (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher), the documentary features rare archival footage and exclusive interviews with several heads of state, papal biographer George Weigel; John Paul’s lifelong assistant Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, archbishop of Kraków; and Richard Allen, Ronald Reagan’s National Security Advisor, among others.

The 90-minute film has been airing nationwide on public television throughout the United States through a partnership with WTTW Chicago and the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA). The film’s next airing on WTTW Primetime will take place Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.
