Apply to Become an Illinois Road Scholar. Meet Illinoisans across the state and share the stories that interest you. Deadline: Friday, June 3rd at 5pm

Illinois Humanities invites authors, artists, educators, and cultural practitioners of all kinds to apply to join the 2016-17 edition of its Road Scholars Speakers Bureau. The application form is available at www.ilhumanities.org/roadscholars. The application deadline is Friday, June 3, 2016, at 5 PM.

The Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Bureau will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2017. It enables Illinois writers, storytellers, historians, folklorists, musicians, and living history actors, among others, to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout our state. It also gives local nonprofit organizations opportunities to present compelling, free-admission cultural programs to their communities for a modest fee.

Proposals for presentations on any humanities-related subject and in any format are welcome. We’ll be especially interested in proposals for programs in which the speaker begins with a brief presentation about a particular topic or theme and then leads the audience in a discussion or activity related to it.

We’ll also welcome proposals for presentations that will:

address topics of interest to people between ages 16 and 25
be available in Spanish and relevant to Latino Illinoisans
explore the future of agriculture in Illinois and its potential cultural implications
discuss issues related to public education
or address topics associated with major anniversaries of significant cultural occurrences in 2017, such as the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation or the 100th anniversaries of the beginning of the Great Migration, the East St. Louis race riot, and the entry of the United States into World War I
More information is available at www.ilhumanities.org/roadscholars. Those who have questions may contact Matt Meacham, program coordinator, at matt.meacham@ilhumanities.org or (312) 422-5589.
